Is Wicker Patio Furniture Eco-Friendly?

Posted on April 29, 2019 by Devon Metcalfe

There’s nothing like doing your bit to help the environment. Whether it’s a small change or a lifelong commitment, every time we take action by making eco-friendly choices, we’re helping to save the planet. So, when it comes to furnishing your home, surely there are more environmentally-conscious choices you can be making? Of course there are!

If you adore al fresco dining but want to make sure you’re doing as little harm to the environment as possible, you might want to invest in wicker furniture. Yes, it really is sustainable. Read on to find out more.

Wooden vs Wicker Furniture

When we think of traditional garden furniture, wooden tables and benches may spring to mind. Having wooden patio furniture is great for the summer time where you want to spend as much time as possible dining al fresco in the sunshine. However, come winter time it can be a little problematic. Often, you’ll need to find a suitable waterproof cover or make room in your shed for storage. This is because when wooden furniture is left outside in adverse weather conditions, it can start to chip and fall apart.

Wicker furniture, on the other hand, is more hardy when it comes to the rain and snow. You can leave it outdoors all year-round and still expect to see it in the same great condition when you uncover it for the summer months.

How Eco-Friendly Patio Furniture is Made

  • Sourcing the Materials

When it comes to sourcing natural rattan to make the eco-friendly patio furniture, the first port of call is Indonesia. It’s the world’s largest rattan supplier, providing nearly 70% of all trade! Because their services are so in-demand, those making the furniture will have access to ethical traders who ensure local communities are protected.

  • Harvesting

Rattan can grow up to 6 metres per year. It’s also able to grow in tricky terrain, such as floodwater that may otherwise make land unusable. Once it’s grown to its full height, it’s then harvested. This provides jobs for locals in the area, helping to maintain a stable economy.

  • Woven into Garden Furniture

The word ‘wicker’ actually only refers to the weaving process. To start, the natural rattan materials are wet to make it easier to work with. This should ideally be done by hand to achieve the very best finish. Each strand is woven around a frame, creating a weave to build the full wicker effect. It’s then left to dry!
