Wicker Furniture Care Tips Before Winter

Posted on December 24, 2018 by Devon Metcalfe

It’s always a good idea to look after your wicker furniture no matter what the weather’s like outside. However, it’s wise to pay extra attention to your furniture when it starts to get a little colder. Even if you’ve invested in some quality all-weather furniture, some small general maintenance and upkeep will ensure it says looking in prime condition for longer.

Here’s our step-by-step guide featuring wicker furniture care tips:

Step 1 – Clean Off Dirt

Cleaning your wicker furniture is simple and easy to do. It’s a great idea to do this after summer before you store furniture away, because it will be clean and ready for use when you bring it out of storage. Create a mix of warm soapy water and grab a soft sponge or cloth. Gently wash off any dirt and build-up and rinse again with cold water. Don’t be afraid to scrub a little harder if you’ve got any stubborn stains. Let it dry naturally.

Step 2 – Cushion Cleaning

Cushions should be cleaned at least once a year. Check whether your cushions are machine washable, ensuring you choose the right temperature. If they can’t be washed in the machine, you can clean them just as well with a sponge and warm soapy water. Leave them to air dry.

Step 3 – Packing It Away

When winter comes around, we’re less and less likely to spend time in our gardens. Many people choose to store their furniture away in their conservatory so they can still continue to use it throughout winter. If you don’t have a conservatory, then carefully put it away inside your garden shed.

Step 4 – Protective Sheet

Whenever you’re packing away your furniture, you should always protect it with a plastic covering sheet. Even if you’re storing your furniture in your shed, covering it over will just ensure that it doesn’t get dirty after you’ve cleaned it, and also ward away any insects who may like to make it their home over winter!

If you don’t have any space to store your furniture indoors, then this step is particularly crucial. Make sure you secure the sheet down all over the furniture, legs too. Then keep it pinned down with a heavy brick or stones.
